Production Rust databases have solved this too. sled uses inline-or-Arc-backed IVec buffers, Fjall built a custom ByteView type, redb wrote a user-space page cache in ~565 lines. The .to_vec() anti-pattern is known and documented. The reimplementation used it anyway.
